Scarlet Sins
“When I am dead, I hope it may be saidHis sins were scarlet, but his books were read.”    1.      “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man” wrote Francis Bacon. He was a renowned English author, courtier and philosopher (1561 – 1626).  Later, may be after his death, there were reports that he had the bottom pinchi... more...

Meditatio
When I carefully consider the curious habits of dogsI am compelled to concludeThat man is the superior animal. When I consider the curious habits of manI confess, my friend, I am puzzled. Ezra Pound’s Meditatio got it right. Do take a look at the cute innocence of the little pup on my dream space. He is named Flame, a Golden Retriever. He barks at ... more...

Not know shit from shinola
Frozy! (my country cousin from Cherpallacherry), you inspired this post. “Sir, you certainly are a shining wit”. I am sure you noticed the spoonerism. (Do forgive me, this is just in jest).  Your post “ Loose Motion” had me in splits. And coincidentally I was reading this book, “ Eats, shites and leaves”. The author is A Parody, and his book a paro... more...

Not In the fitness of things
Ateliers Fitness made a promise. To wash and wish away my sins of fifteen plus years in 3 months.  I whistled, “sweat (sweet) dreams are made of these”. After a few days, I strangely liked the treadmill, hated the elliptical, felt macho lifting weights and grimaced doing the abs.  There were more trainers than clients at the time I visited the five... more...

A test of love
She liked many things about him. She couldn’t wait to be with him be it sms, email, or in person. She would hate to admit it, but he was one person she liked better than anyone else and as much as she liked herself (to be truthful a little less than herself). He was cool. He loved her. He said he loved her more than anyone else in the wide whole wo... more...

Sloshed
The first time I met her, I was not original. But then have I ever been with girls. I told her, “ Hi! That’s a beautiful body your dress is wearing”. It was a line I had picked up from a James Hadley Chase book.  That was my first ever interaction with her. She was quiet. She didn’t say anything then and anyway I had moved away. She had quite a rep... more...

Fiction-- My best ten
I mourn the passing on of the writer Sujatha (Rangarajan). He was 73 and died yesterday. In the early 80’s, in a bid to improve my Tamil, I grew up on the Ganesh and Vasanth stories he wrote then from Bangalore. Of course, later, he used to frequent the Madras Book Fair and I have seen and heard him. I have not read any of his books after the 80’s.... more...

When a man loves a woman
I read numerous valentine billboards, messages, commercials, cards and suddenly remembered this song, " when a man loves a woman". When I looked up google search, I also saw this lovely piece by Latimer. I post the lyrics of the Percy Sledge song  and the write up by Leah Latimer. "The best thing a man can do for his children is to love their mothe... more...

Pages from the past
Folks: This was written in 1993 when I shifted to Delhi and was still finding my feet there.  “There is no problem so big that it cannot be run away from” My desideratum after shifting to Delhi could obviously run into pages. Of course I miss my parents, my brother, my sister, my friends of 20 plus years, my favourite haunts, the general familiar... more...

Who moved my Chutney?
Even as I wrote about the ubiquitous (my blog of16 December 2007), I immediately thought of the things missing from my childhood. Things gone with the wind as much as gone or fading due to technological changes, trends and fads.  The forgotten art of writing letters is one. I mean the ones you write by hand, pen on paper or on an inland or postcard... more...

A walk in the Rain
Monsoons have arrived in Kerala, I informed my Mom. Time to get our monsoon gear ready. Oh it will take at least 3 days to reach us, my mother assured me, firmly convinced that the monsoon will be boarding the Howrah-Trivandrum Express. Having a car and a girlfriend is the double whammy of highest order. I happen to have the misery of both. Last weekend we set off on a “long drive” excursion which she finds mysteriously romantic. Are we God?
Are we God? Many religions posit that God created the universe and then claim to have exclusive revelations as to what He expects of us. However, it seems to me that the creator-created dichotomy is artificial and even if we posit that God created it all, it is obvious that the one thing He could not have created would be life, for the simple reaso...  more...

11 things you won't learn in school
Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school.  He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
